Software Update Services (SUS) - Server Configuration

Requirements:

To install the SUS-Server you need a running Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server environment. You could download the SUS-Server on the following Microsoft website:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/sus/

If you don't have an Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server, you could also use Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000 Professional. But in this case you must patch the SUS-Server package.

Patch the Software Update Services for Windows XP/2000 Professional:

If you are running the original installation file on Windows XP or Windows 2000 the error message "You must be running Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server ..." appears. To bypass this issue it's necessary to patch the installation file. Therefore open the Windows Explorer and change to C:\Documents and Settings\[your_username]\Local Settings\Temp\. Now execute the SUS installation file and leave the error message open. You could find in the opened directory a new *.msi file (filesize is about 47MB). Copy this file to any directory and close the SUS Installer.
To edit the *.msi file you must convert the file to *.xml. Therefore download and install msi2xml from http://msi2xml.sourceforge.net. Open the command line and change to the directory where the *.msi file located. Type "msi2xml xxxx.msi" (replace xxxx with the filename). After a while the *.msi file will be converted to *.xml (filesize is about 65MB). Rename the *.xml file to sussetup.xml. Now open sussetup.xml and search for "You must be running Windows Server 2003". Delete all lines from <row> before search result up to the next </row>. Save sussetup.xml and run "xml2msi sussetup.xml". After a while you have the patched sussetup.msi setup file.

Install Internet Information Services (IIS) - only for Windows 2000/XP Professional:

Open "Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components", show "Internet Information Services (IIS)" details and select "World Wide Web Service" with all dependences. Click OK and then Next to start the installation.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 you must open the port 80 in the firewall rule.
